Wayanad – Forest Hikes
A Date with Nature
The Kurichiyas were a nomadic hunter gatherer clan who turned to agriculture and have devised ingenious farming techniques in the recent times. Natives of Wayanad, they were known to be expert archers who have a deep connect with the forest owing to their dependency on it. History also speaks of their martial skills and their battle against the British alongside the Pazahassi Raja (de facto head of the kingdom of Kottayam) in the early 19th century. They are identified by the sandalwood paste that adorns their forehead and chest.
On a Forest Hike in Wayanad, explore the dense evergreen forests of the Western Ghats and get a chance to interact with the indigenous forest communities like the Kurichiyas that reside here.
The Battle Hardened Ajaigarh Fort
Ajaigarh Fort is an important fort believed to have been built in the 9th century. The battlements of the fort follow the top contours of the hill on which it is situated. It forms a rough triangle of about 3 miles in circuit in which there were 5 gates originally. There are several water tanks on the summit that are still believed to be sources of pure water. Trek to the top reveals the ruins of 3 Jain temples that are built in 12th century style, similar to the ones at Khajuraho.
Architectural splendour is what draws the intrepid traveller on a Hike to Ajaigarh Fort which goes well off the beaten tourist trail.
