Delhi – Cycling Tour of Lutyens’ Delhi
Origin of Lutyens’ Delhi
At the Coronation Darbar held in Delhi in 1911, King George V announced shifting of the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi. Two most famous architects – Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker were placed at the helm of affairs. While both the architects advocated for classical European architecture Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy opined that it should be an amalgamation of both Western and Indian architecture i.e. major structural elements being classical European and the rest of the structural elements, motifs and embellishments being Indian.
